With over 30 years of public service, Jennie Thomason is committed to making our courthouse more accessible, efficient, and welcoming for every member of our community.

About Jennie

My name is Jennie Wells Thomason, and I am running for New Hanover County Clerk of Superior Court. Born and raised in Wilmington, I am a proud graduate of the New Hanover County public school system. I earned my Bachelor of Social Work from NC State University and my law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.

For more than 30 years, I have dedicated my career to public service, providing judicial services, legal representation, and advocacy for children, families, and some of the most vulnerable members of our community. My experience includes serving as Court Advocate for Domestic Violence Shelter and Services (The Open Gate) in Wilmington, Staff Attorney for the Department of Social Services’ Child Protective Services division, and more than seven years as a Magistrate Judge serving the people of New Hanover County.

I live in Wilmington with my husband John, our son Jack, and three very spoiled cats. I’m proud to be raising my son just a few streets from the home where I grew up. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, watching movies, and spending time with my family.

I Believe The Clerk's Office Should:

Focus on customer service

Be welcoming and accessible to all

Provide clear, concise, and accurate information

Demonstrate efficiency and accountability

Why Vote for Me

As an attorney and former Magistrate Judge in New Hanover County, I have firsthand knowledge of the day-to-day operations of our courts and courthouse. I understand what works well, where challenges exist, and where improvements are needed.

With more than 20 years of legal experience, I am well prepared to ensure the Clerk’s Office upholds the law, safeguards critical records, and operates with integrity. Systems and procedures must be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure records are properly maintained and that requests are handled promptly and in accordance with the law.

Throughout my career in social work, law, and on the bench, I have demonstrated the ability to manage complex situations with patience, professionalism, and empathy. I approach decision-making with fairness and compassion, always mindful of the people our justice system serves.

As Clerk, I will lead an office that communicates clearly, operates transparently, and prioritizes public service. My focus will be on exceptional customer service, transparency, and effective time management. Leadership sets the tone, and I will lead by example.

A well-run Clerk’s Office serves the community while strengthening the entire justice system. My goal is to make the New Hanover County Clerk’s Office one of the most efficient and professional in North Carolina. With strong leadership and collaboration, we can deliver the level of service our community deserves.
